Bulbils are the small onion bulbs that form on the tops of the plants. I am selling these smaller bulbils by weight and not count, they are still mostly attached together in clumps the way they grow on the plants and there are approximately 30 to 60 bulblets per 3 ounce. They will look similar to the pictures.
Egyptian walking onions produce mild and sweet green onions in early springtime, the top bulblets are edible, and the mature bulbs can be stored and eaten like any other onion bulbs. The mature bulbs have a fairly hot onion flavor and are best used in cooking rather than eating raw.
Egyptian onions are perennial and regrow year after year when the mature bulbs are left in the ground, and the bulblets that form on the tops of the plants root and grow wherever they fall to the ground. They have proven to be very hardy here on my farm, never requiring water or care, and they form natural patches of onions that out-compete the weeds. This variety that I grow is an heirloom that has been in my family for over forty years and these bulbs have been grown totally naturally here at Full Sky farm.
