Also known as West Indian Gherkin, Maroon Cucumber, and Cackrey, Burr Gherkins are native to Africa but have become naturalized in other areas of the world. It is known for its small, spiny, green fruit that ripens to a pale yellow and can be eaten fresh or pickled. While related to common cucumbers, it is a different species and is often a more productive and disease-resistant option for gardeners.
