Smooth Sumac is a drought tolerant shrub that is native to much of North America. It is a beautiful landscape plant and will grow into a colony of brightly colored shrubs. The plant has many medicinal uses, can be made into several different colors of dye, as well as producing edible berries that are most commonly used to make “sumac lemonade”. The berry clusters stay on the plants throughout winter providing food for birds and other wildlife.

Note – some websites suggest using a hot water soak or scarification before cold stratifying sumac seeds for three months prior to planting in order to induce germination.
