Red Malabar is very reliable and easily grown spinach-like green. It’s perennial in zone 9 and a fast growing annual in areas where the winters get cold, it often self-seeds so I find replanting each year unnecessary. It loves summertime heat unlike most garden greens, producing an abundant amount of tender and mild edible leaves despite the scorching heat of summer. The tender tips of the climbing lines and also edible raw or cooked, and the bright red juice from the berries can be used as a edible dye. The red vines are beautiful and the plant has medicinal uses making it an all around great addition to the garden.
I obtained the seeds of this particular variety of Red Malabar from a seed bank around fifteen years ago and it has proven to be a great variety.
These seeds have been grown totally naturally here at Full Sky Farm.
