Chinese Yam aerial tubers

(Dioscorea batatas / Dioscorea polystachya)

Chinese Yam (aka Cinnamon vine) is a perennial vine with dark glossy leaves, white flowers, edible underground tubers, and edible areal tubers which grow on the vines.

Known as Shan Yao in Chinese herbalism, this is the edible type of Chinese yam with leaves growing in opposite pairs on the vine.

In cool climates (such as here in Kansas) the vines die back to the ground in the wintertime and new vines regrow from the underground tubers again in the spring. They are slow growing their first year but after a couple years when the underground tuber gets established the vine is very fast growing can grow 20′ high within a coupe weeks.

New cinnamon vine plants grow easily from the aerial tubers which fall to the ground in the fall.

Choose the quantity and size of aerial tubers you would like, the small tubers are between the size of a pea and a marble and the large tubers are around grape size.

These were grown naturally and organically here at Full sky Farm and the tubers are freshly harvested September 2024
